Guildford Thunder Korfball Club was started in 2014. Our aim is to teach new skills and gameplay to people of all different ages and abilities whilst being a fun, friendly and socially engaging club too!
NEW SEASON BEGINS
There is only eight days to go before the new season begins. Our first fixture of the season sees our newly promoted first team (Thunder) travel to Oxford to take on Didcot Dragons 1st and 2nd teams in a gruelling double header on Sunday 30th. A week later the second team will visit the newly created Basingstoke Bulls 2nd team on Sunday 7th October. We have been busy training in preparation for the new season, developing all aspects of the game for the first team in what will be a very tough season, and continuing to introduce new players to the game.
What is Korfball?
Korfball was invented in 1902 by Dutch PE teacher Nico Broekhuysen. Korf is Dutch for basket. It is an adaptation of the Swedish game, ringboll, which itself shares lineage with both basketball and netball. It is the only mixed-sex team sport recognised by the International Olympic Committee.
It has been in the Olympics twice – 1920 and 1928 – but is on the list of approved sports which could be included in future games ! Initially only popular in the Netherlands and Belgium, it drew criticism from social conservatives for promoting loose morals (but it’s not the only reason we love the sport).
We run Two teams in the Oxford Korfball league. Our newly promoted 1st team will play in Division 2south while our second team remains in division 3 south. We also play throughout the summer in tournaments. Click of the buttons below to see our fixtures and follow our progress this year!
