Thanks to everyone involved in organising and participating in the Chris Carter Cup at Guildford Spectrum on Sunday 25 September 2022.
We had an amazing time meeting and playing with loads of southern teams. Our first team placed 3rd overall winning all but one game and after a nail-biting penalty shootout against Abingdon Atoms. Meanwhile, our second team placed 10th with several players having their competitive debuts. Check out some of the action on our brand new Tiktok @gtkorfball. Great placements and efforts all round! Bring on the next game!

Welcome to all new members as well as those returning for a new season from your committee.
To ensure club members receive an understanding of what is going on in the club’s background, the committee will create these short monthly updates. These updates are available on the club Whatsapp group, but you can also download the September 2022 Guildford Korfball Update (PDF, 12MB). It's our next player profile in our getting to know us series - take a look!
Who are you? Hayleigh Richards - First team captain and all things social media for the club How long have you been playing korfball? Since 2014 when Guildford Thunder was first established! What are your korfball highlights?
What are 3 good reasons to give korfball a try?
Fancy giving korfball a try? Feel free to drop us a message for more info. The 2022/23 korfball season gets going this month on home turf for Surrey’s finest: Guildford Thunder Korfball Club. Our silky skills will be a major draw for spectators in the Chris Carter Memorial Cup, which is running for the first time since 2019 due to the covid pandemic. The cup is named for Chris Carter, an Oxford teacher and korfballer whole died of a brain tumour. It will be fought for by teams from all over Oxfordshire Korfball Association as part of a host of 2022/23 season fixtures just announced. Modern Colosseum The gleaming giant greenhouse that is Guildford Spectrum will be the hosting venue for the revived competition. With its plentiful parking and often-working aircon, the Spectrum is likely to be a Theatre of Dreams for Thunder as we take on all-comers and obviously vanquish them all (we hope).

Zuhib Munshi - player/coach for Guildford Thunder Korfball Club How long have you been playing/coaching? I started playing korfball in 1999 and then started coaching in 2006. What are your korfball highlights?
What are 3 great reasons to try korfball?
Who's your favourite player? Every player brings something special to the club which others can't replicate. I don't have a favourite player but admire certain qualities in every player. Fancy being coached by Zu? Send us an email to let us know you want to come and try korfball at the best club in Surrey! This summer saw a busy time for Guildford Thunder Korfball Club with a string of fun tournament matches around England and The Netherlands as well as coverage by our journalistic friends. First up, our ace captain Hayleigh Richards got up at the crack of dawn to face a grilling on BBC Radio Surrey’s Breakfast Show. Despite a comic mishearing by presenter, Mark Carter, Hayleigh woke up the county with a fun dive into the sport and why Guildford Thunder is such a great club. We then featured in numerous local outlets including the Farnham Herald, Round&About and VantagePoint. And while the sun was out, we spent our Thursday evenings training in the park (followed by the occasional shandy at The Weyside) in preparation for nearby tournaments at Cheam Nomads and Croydon Korfball Club. We played really well against a field of local, regional and national teams, introducing several new junior players and even winning the odd game in between trips to the barbecue. Finally, in August, several of our intrepid members headed off to Leiden to play in the Velocitas tournament - getting some great experience against Dutch players and having great fun into the bargain. If this wets your appetite for playing korfball this autumn, just send us a message to let us know you want to come along for a trial session. |
